To accompany his recent book, Shirehampton Sketches, Richard Coates has developed a detailed online bibliography of resources covering almost every aspect of the Shirehampton area - hosted by the Regional History Centre.
After 20 years of research, the Filton Community History Group closed in 2018. Some notable contributions included the BAC 100 (Bristol Aeroplane Company) oral history project, the Millennium Schools Project, and the ‘Inspiring Women’ exhibition for South Gloucestershire Council. All these successful projects have connected the local community of Filton to their rich and proud history. Brian Edwards explores the tensions between individual interest and spatial identity, the reluctance of some local historians to engage in historical debate, and their tendency towards antiquarianism. This article argues that antiquarianism endangers the knowledge of history by masking it. In its place, Edwards advocates for an organic history which reflects popular historical consciousness; a history which embraces everything from photographs of dart teams to invented local traditions.
